About the Dallas Coboys
Joining the National Football League in 1960 as an expansion team, the Dallas Cowboys have been a force in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference ever since holding records for the most conference championships and the most Super Bowl Appearances with eight.
They are also the only team to ever have 20 consecutive winning seasons, achieved in the years between 1966 and 1985. During that run, they only missed the play-offs twice, in 1974 and 1984. That winning streak is one of the greatest in all of professional sports, earning the Cowboys the best average in the NFL at .580. All of that adds up to put the team at a value of $1.65 billion, according to Forbes in 2009. That makes them the second most-valuable sports franchise in the world, behind Manchester United in the UK.
Head coach Tom Landry and quarterback Roger Staubach were largely responsible for that lengthy run of wins. After Staubach's retirement in 1980, the Cowboys quickly started heading downhill. The trend was so bad that it led to the team being sold twice within four years. The second deal resulted in the firing of Landry who had led the team since it joined the League.
Despite hiring the University of Miami's head coach Jimmy Johnson and grabbing UCLA's star quarterback Troy Aikman in the first round of the draft in 1989, without Landry, the Cowboys ended the season with a 1–15 record. Johnson focused earnestly on a swift rebuild by drafting more solid players to fill in his line-up, including running back Emmitt Smith in 1990.
The work paid off and, in 1992, the Cowboys ended the year at 13–3, their best regular season record ever. January, 1993 saw them in the Super Bowl for the first time in 14 years. They easily took down the Buffalo Bills 52–17, forcing a record nine turnovers along the way. The Cowboys defeated Buffalo once again in the 1994 Super Bowl with a 30–13 victory.
After sending a record-setting 11 players to that year's Pro Bowl, Coach Johnson announced his resignation. University of Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer was brought in and racked up a 12–4 season, but missed the Super Bowl after a loss the the San Francisco 49ers. For the following year, superstar cornerback Deion Sanders joined the team and the Cowboys trumped the Pittsburgh Steelers 27–17 for their fifth NFL Championship.
After more troubles ensued both on and off the field, Switzer resigned in 1998 leaving Chan Gailey in charge. That didn't work out so well, so defensive coordinator Dave Champo took over. He mustered three losing seasons, each with 5–11 finishes. Finally, Jones lured Bill Parcells out of retirement to helm the Cowboys in 2003.
Bringing in a 10–6 season record, the team surprised everyone and landed themselves a playoff berth thanks to their stellar defense. The glory was not to be sustained and, by 2006, the Cowboys were back on the losing end of the stick. Parcells retired and Wade Phillips came in, leading the team to a 13–3 record in his first year. A loss to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship round left them shy of another Super Bowl appearance.
The next year, 2008, was plagued by injuries and left the Cowboys out of the playoffs completely. Sadly, 2009 started off just as bad when the team's practice facility collapsed during a severe windstorm. A dozen players and coaches were injured. An up and down season followed, ending with a decent showing, but a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional playoffs cut things short.
