About Rod Stewart

Once considered rock music's best interpretive singer and a solid enough songwriter, at some point Rod Stewart took a career turn toward stardom and adult contemporary that left critics in a lurch. Where once a rawness that combined elements of folk, rock, blues, and country existed, Stewart sacrificed his roots in favor of pop trends and mainstream success.

It all started in the early 1960s. Stewart toured Europe with folksinger Wizz Jones before returning to England in 1963 where he signed on as a vocalist with Birmingham-based Jimmy Powell & the Five Dimensions. The R&B group toured around the UK, but recorded only one single that found Stewart playing blues harmonica.

A move back to London, put him in Long John Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men. Though their 1964 single failed to chart, the band made some changes to become Steampacket and found themselves supporting the 1965 summer UK tour of the Rolling Stones and the Walker Brothers.

The next year, Steampacket dissolved leaving Stewart to join up with the blues-rock outfit Shotgun Express. That didn't last and Stewart then hopped over to the Jeff Beck Group in late 1966. This was where Stewart began to shine.

With Beck's guitar chops and Stewart's sexy vocals, the band blazed a new musical trail. Their thick blues-rock sound charted a course that would later become heavy metal. Their debut set, Truth, dropped in the fall of 1968, with success in both the U.S. and the UK. Throughout 1968 and 1969, the group toured both countries and built a loyal following.

Their second offering came in the summer of 1969. Beck-Ola was another smash on both sides of the pond, but couldn't get the band from dissolution.

At the end of 1969, Stewart and Jeff Beck Group bassist Ron Wood resurfaced as part of the Small Faces. Wood took up guitar and the band became the Faces for its debut release, First Step. On the side, Rod got himself a solo deal and simultaneously issued his first record, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down (or The Rod Stewart Album in the U.S.).

Stewart's folk rock-infused R&B fared better with American audiences and signaled that he was a force to be reckoned with all on his own. The Faces release followed in short order and actually had the reverse influence, doing better in the UK. Reminiscent of the Stones, the band's thrashabout live shows earned them fans on both continents.

For his second solo outing, Gasoline Alley, Stewart embarked on a U.S. solo tour in 1970. But it would be 1971 that would mark a turning point in his career.

The sophomore effort from the Faces, Long Player, was a hit, as was Stewart's third solo set, Every Picture Tells a Story, which topped the charts in both Britain and America. His rendition of "Reason to Believe" did well enough as the album's first single, but the B-side, "Maggie May," went to number one hit in both the UK and U.S.

The Faces countered with their third collection, A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse. Riding Rod's solo momentum, the record cracked the Top 10 in both countries and yielded a Top 40 single in the U.S. with "Stay with Me."

Stewart's solo success also had its downside – tension within the band. After a spring tour with the Faces, he issued his fourth solo project, Never a Dull Moment. It went to number two in the U.S. and number one in the UK. In the spring of 1973, the Faces took a bow with their final album, Ooh La La, which topped the charts in the UK and made it to number 21 in the U.S. Another tour followed which would be their last.

Two years later, Stewart was back with Smiler, yet another success. That was followed in short order by Atlantic Crossing, released in the summer of 1975, which detailed Stewart's move to the U.S. and smoothed out his sound. By the end of 1975, the Faces were over.

Rod continued his pop trajectory on 1976's A Night on the Town. The moved proved successful as the album became his first to go platinum on the strength of songs like "Tonight's the Night."

Using the same mold, Foot Loose & Fancy Free came out the following year and went on to sell more than three million copies. Adding touches of disco to the mix for 1978's Blondes Have More Fun, Stewart earned himself a number one single in "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and a chart-topping album.

By the time 1981's Tonight I'm Yours rolled out, Rod's sound was taking on bits of new wave and synth pop in keeping with the times. Though it sold over a million copies, the album began a downturn for the singer that spanned his following four efforts including 1983's Camouflage.

By 1988, things were starting to turn around with Out of Order. Stewart's cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train," which was part of the 1989 Storyteller box set, was a solid hit. Then, in 1991, Vagabond Heart kept his buzz going.

Teaming up with Ron Wood for his 1993 MTV Unplugged performance, Stewart managed another Top 10 single with "Have I Told You Lately" off the accompanying Unplugged...and Seated album. The acoustic-based sound worked well enough that Stewart tried a slicker version of it for his 1995 album, A Spanner in the Works, along with a couple of subsequent sets.

Needing a new shtick and wanting to cross over into the more contemporary urban demographics, Stewart used 2001's Human as a test balloon. It burst, failing to gain favor with fans or critics.

Stewart rebooted yet again for his next collection, It Had to Be You, the first in his series of Great American Songbook explorations. It worked, as did its successors, 2002's As Time Goes By, 2004's Stardust, and 2005's Thanks for the Memory. At the end of it all, the four volumes were pulled together for The Great American Songbook Box Set.

For Still the Same: Great Rock Classics of Our Time in 2006, Stewart continued to focus on cover tunes, but shifted gears to rock & roll. His version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" became the album's lead single.

Motown classics were next on his hit list for 2009's Soulbook. Then, in 2010, Stewart backtracked to add a fifth edition to his Great American Songbook series with Fly Me to the Moon.
