About Justin Bieber
Justin Drew Bieber was born March 1, 1994 and is a Canadian pop/R&B singer. Bieber signed a record deal with Island Records, where he began his professional career. And Bieber was named the hottest star of 2009 by J-14, newcomer of the year by MuchMusic, and listed by Celebuzz as one of the Top 10 YouTube stars of the decade.
YouTube is a powerful force. And Justin Bieber is living proof of it. Having seen Bieber's YouTube videos, music mogul Scooter Braun signed on his manager and brought him down to Atlanta. After a meeting with Usher, Braun secured Bieber a contract at Island Records and a star was born.
In 2006, having taught himself how to play a number of instruments, including piano, trumpet, drums, and guitar, Bieber started singing when he entered a local competition in his hometown, Stratford, Ontario. As his performances began to shine, Bieber's mother thought it would be nice to post clips on YouTube to share with relatives who couldn't see him live. Some of the clips found young Justin singing songs by his favorite R&B artists, like Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Usher, and others.
Braun saw the videos and put the wheels in motion. Braun connected Bieber to Usher who connected him to L.A. Reid who inked the deal with Island Records in October, 2008. Timberlake's label was also in the running to sign him.
Four singles were released before the album ever came out: “One Time” (with guest vocals by Usher), “One Less Lonely Girl,” “Love Me,” and “Favorite Girl.” All four tracks made it into Canada's Top 15 and Billboard's Top 40 in the States. Bieber was the first artist to ever so much success prior to an album's release.
In November of 2009, the first of his two-CD debut finally saw daylight. My World earned a favorable response from critics and fans alike, and landed at number six on the Billboard Top 200. It topped the Canadian album chart. My World went on to sell more than a million copies in the U.S. in its first two months. It went platinum in Canada in only a month.
As MuchMusic's Newcomer of the Year and J-14's hottest star of 2009, the 15-year-old Bieber was all the rage. Celebuzz even dubbed him one of the top 10 YouTube stars of the decade.
During his lightning-fast rise to fame, Bieber has appeared on a number of television shows. He's a regular and favorite on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Justin also performed at the Obamas' Christmas in Washington event and on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. Touring has also been on the agenda, including teaming up with Taylor Swift for several runs. Bieber was even recruited for the “We Are the World” remake to benefit Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
In January, 2010, a new single, “Baby,” foreshadowed the March street date for the second piece of the puzzle, My World 2.0. To support the releases, Bieber embarked upon his first headlining concert tour, along with more dates with Swift.
