About Memphis the Musical
Broadway seems to be pushing two primary leit motifs as of late – racial issues and rock music. The new Memphis musical tackles both. The 1950s story centers around a young, white DJ named Huey Calhoun who shakes things up in town by playing black music on the radio. He also shakes things up in town by falling in love with a black singer named Felicia Farrell.
When Huey starts spinning Felicia's music on air, her career takes off and she's able to break out of the segregated clubs. And a new era of rock-and-roll emerges. Despite the public embrace of black music, their interracial love affair is still strictly taboo. That point is driven home when the couple is attacked by an angry white mob.
Chad Kimball stars as Huey, with Montego Glover giving Felicia life. Joe DiPietro's original story is loosely based on the life of Dewey Phillips and is supported by music from Bon Jovi's David Bryan. The play was first staged in Massachusetts, California, and Seattle before opening on Broadway in October of 2009. A national tour is on tap for 2011 kicking off at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.
The New York Post proclaims that it has the perfect blend of “catchy songs, heaping spoonfuls of inspirational moments and gifted performers at the top of their game.”
“The exhilarating new musical shaking the Shubert Theatre is the very essence of what a Broadway musical should be. Memphis is sensuous, soulful, tuneful and theatrical, expertly cast and superbly sung,” or so says Associated Press.
Another Memphis-based musical opened at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre in April, 2010. Million Dollar Quartet dramatizes recording sessions held at the legendary Sun Record Studios on December 4, 1956. In the room for an impromptu jam were Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash.
The session started like any other with Perkins coming in to cut a new track. Sun's mastermind, Sam Phillips, brought in newcomer Lewis to fill out the sound. Elvis – a huge star at the time – popped by on a whim, and a young Johnny Cash did the same.
In one of his many genius moves, Phillips left the tapes rolling to "capture the moment." He also called a local reporter and photographer to come over. An article ran the next day in the Memphis Press-Scimitar under the title 'Million Dollar Quartet' with a now-famous photo of the four men around the piano.
The new musical of the same name was written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott. After premiering in Florida, Million Dollar Quartet broke box office records at Seattle's Village Theatre. It went on to see success in Chicago before making it to the Great White Way this year.
The New Yorker calls it like it sees it: “This show kicks ass.”
