Widespread Panic can trace its roots back to 1981 when guitarist/singer John Bell and guitarist Michael Houser met while students at the University of Georgia. They were joined by bassist Dave Schools in 1984 and drummer Todd Nance in 1986. Later that year percussionist Domingo S. Ortiz, also known as Sonny, came aboard. In 1992, keyboardist John Hermann, or JoJo, replaced T. Lavitz who had joined Panic the year before. The band was forced to change their lineup again after Houser died of pancreatic cancer in August of 2002. He was replaced by George McConnell who was later replaced by Jimmy Herring.

The band released its first album, Space Wrangler, in 1988. It's been reissued three times. Their first major label studio album, known by fans as "Mom's Kitchen" but officially self-titled, dropped in 1991. Also in 1991, actor Billy Bob Thornton directed the band's first concert film "Widespread Panic: Live from the Georgia Theatre."

Widespread Panic quickly earned a reputation as one of the America's best jam bands. With their blend of blues, rock, and jazz, Panic has followed in the footsteps of another great southern institution, The Allman Brothers. And due to their prowess in performing live, allowing fans to tape their concerts, and a robust touring schedule, Widespread Panic is often compared to the Grateful Dead and Phish.

While nowhere near a commercial success, 22 total albums and only 3 million in sales, Panic can certainly pack them into a venue. Their 1998 CD release party in Athens, Georgia drew between 80,000 and 100,000 fans. In 2002, the band played to more than 70,000 people at the very first Bonnaroo Music Festival. And in May of 2006, they broadcasted a show from Atlanta to more than 60,000 fans watching in select movie theatres across the nation. The band holds the record for the most sold out shows at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado with 32. To celebrate that record, the city and county of Denver made June 27, 2008 "Widespread Panic Day."

Panic is also very involved in charity work. They've recorded or performed for the Make It Right Foundation New Orleans, The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation, Amnesty International, Clear Path International, and Tunes for Tot. The band also holds food drives at select concerts.
