About Cirque du Soleil's "O"

With O, Cirque du Soleil ventured into new terrain – water. Staged in, around, and above a 1.5 million-gallon pool, O has enjoyed a permanent home at the Bellagio in Las Vegas since October of 1998. The production's theatre was designed to resemble a 14th century European opera house.

A cast of some 85 scuba-certified acrobats, divers, and synchronized swimmers perform acts including trapeze, contortion, high dives, Russian swing, aerial hoops, and more. The 88-degree pool is equipped with underwater regulators and a communication system. It also features a stage lift whose surface is covered with thousands of tiny holes to allow it to rise and fall in the water without creating a wake.

The O musicians are encased in glass enclosures in order to protect their instruments from any water damage. Benoit Jutras composed the actual music for O drawing from both the classical Western genre and various world music traditions. Among the instruments incorporated are African guitar and harp (kora), Chinese violin (erhu), Colombian guitar, bagpipes, ancient woodwinds, cello, and a plethora of percussion instruments. Two editions of the O score have been released. The first in late 1998 and the second in 2005.

From the Venetian courts to the Arabian nights, O's costumes are also inspired by many different cultures. Each performer has multiple sets of their costumes in order to maintain appearances as dry. Due to the chemicals in the water, some of the pieces survive only 20 performances. About 40% of the costumes have been treated with a particular brand of silicon sizing to help them withstand the pool water.

The story follows Philemon, a young and curious Sicilian boy who falls into a magical world that brings his fears, hopes, and dreams to life. His adventure is guided by Le Vieux, a mysterious guardian who undertakes his own transformative journey from darkness to light. Other characters include Le Travesti, L'Allume, Aurora, the masked thief, and more.

About Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil (French for "Circus of the Sun") is an entertainment company founded by Guy Laliberté, a former fire-eater, in 1984 and based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It has several resident and touring troupes and draws heavily from the circus tradition. Emphasizing the use of humans as performers, Cirque du Soleil does not make use of animals.
