Black Eyed Peas
The Black Eyed
Peas are an American hip-hop (musical styles
Alternative Rap/Hip-Hop and Jazz Rap/Hip-Hop)
crew from Los Angeles, who have lately enjoyed
massive international pop success. As Atban
Klann, they signed to Ruthless Records (run
by Eazy-E), but their album was never released
because the positive and peaceful lyrics
were too unusual for Ruthless. The group
is composed of Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap, Taboo,
and Fergie.
The Black Eyed Peas formed in Los Angeles in 1995. Originally the band featured will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo, and Kim Hill. Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson) replaced Hill when she left the band in 2000. The group performs a highly accessible blend of hip-hop, pop, dance, and R&B. Their Grammy Award winning sound has earned them appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The American Music Awards, and Saturday Night Live. The Peas were also the halftime entertainment at the Canadian Football League's 93rd Grey Cup.
The Black Eyed Peas released their first album, Behind the Front, in 1998, and their follow-up, Bridging the Gap, in 2000. While floundering commercially, many critics believe these two albums are the Peas' best work. The band's next series of albums, Elephunk (2003), Monkey Business (2005), and The E.N.D. (2009) all achieved great commercial success. In total, the Black Eyed Peas have sold over 23 million albums and 29 million singles worldwide.
In 2009, two Black Eyed Peas' singles, "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling," both from The E.N.D., topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a record 26 straight weeks. The Pea's also become the 11th artist to hold the top two spots on the singles chart. Before 2009, the top spot on the U.S. singles chart had eluded the Peas although they had phenomenal success in the U.K., Australia, and Canada.
The Black Eyed Peas have an extension list of collaborators. The band has worked with Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Jack Johnson, Macy Gray, Q-Tip, Talib KWeli, De La Soul, and Wyclef Jean.
