Hip hop, also spelled hip-hop or hiphop, is a music genre and
a cultural movement developed in urban communities starting
in the 1970s, predominantly by African Americans. It consists
of two components: rapping (MCing) and DJing (production and
scratching). The term hip-hop is often thought to have come
from Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash & the
Furious Five.
Early hip hop has often been credited with helping to decrease
innercity gang violence by replacing physical violence with
hip hop battles, street-style rapping competitions. With the
emergence of commercial and crime-boasting rap during the early
1990s, an emphasis on violence was incorporated, with many rappers
and hiphop artists bragging about drugs, weapons, cheating,
and violence. Although hip hop music now appeals to a broader
demographic, media critics argue that politically and socially
conscious hip hop has been replaced with by media-savvy gangsta
rap mainstream America. See some great hip hop live in concert
