The Los Angeles Dodgers are a Major League Baseball team based in Los Angeles, California . Dodgers are one of five teams in the West Division of the National League (NL). The team was formed in 1883, and moved to the American Association in 1884. Earlier known as Brooklyn Dodgers (1932 – 1957), they moved to Los Angeles in the 1958 season. During their early years in Brooklyn , players usually dodged trolley cars to reach the ballpark, Ebbets Field, which lead to their nick, Dodgers.

The team was officially named Dodgers in 1913. The Dodgers won their first pennants in 1916 and 1920 under the guidance of manager Wilbert Robinson while playing at Ebbets Field. During 1947 to 1966, the Dodgers were honored by seven NL most valuable player (MVP) awards, six rookies of the year awards, and five Cy Young Awards. In 1974, Alston led the Dodgers to his seventh and final pennant. During the 1976 season, manager Tommy Lasorda led the Dodgers to pennants in the next two seasons, but the team was defeated by Yankees in both World Series. In early 1979, Angeles players won the National League rookie of the year award for four seasons: pitcher Rick Sutcliffe in 1979, pitcher Steve Howe in 1980, pitcher Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, and second baseman Steve Sax in 1982. The Los Angeles Dodgers have their home arena at Dodger Stadium, since 1962.

They had earlier played at Ebbets Field (1912-1957) and Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (1958-1961). The park is also known as Chavez Ravine, after the name of the site where it was built. The stadium has a seating capacity of 56,000 fans and can be extended up to 85,000 seats.
