Basically, pundits lambasted Bocelli for his “thin voice,” poor phrasing, and lack of technical prowess. These critics obviously know what they’re talking since Bocelli has only sold about 75 million albums during his career. He’s dominated the classical music charts and is widely regarded as that genre’s most successful and popular performer. Bocelli introduced millions to operatic music and helped popularize the sub-genre of “operatic pop” or “pop opera.” He paved the way for artists like Il Divo, Il Volo, Celtic Woman, Charlotte Church, Josh Groban, and Paul Potts.

While critics may have harsh words to say to Bocelli, but his fellow performs do not. Zubin Mehta, Jose Carreras, Renee Flemming, and Ana Maria Martinez have all gushed about Bocelli’s voice. Bocelli was born on Sept. 22, 1958 in Pisa, Toscana, Italy. He had eyesight problems from birth and was later diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. When he was 12 years old, Bocelli was hit on the head during a soccer game. The blow caused him to suffer a brain hemorrhage that eventually took his eyesight.

Bocelli got his start in 1992 when he was discovered by Italian rock star Zucchero. In early 1994, Bocelli took first place in the “newcomers” category at the Sanremo Music Festival. Later that year, Bocelli made his opera debut in Verdi’s Macbeth. His first album, Il Mare Calmo della Sera, dropped in 1994. He won over American audiences in 1999 with the release of Sogno. That album sold 2.5 million copies in the United States and earned Bocelli a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. It was the first time a classical artist has been nominated in that category since 1961 when Leontyne Price picked up a nod.
