AboutLady Antebellum
Lady Antebellum got its start in 2006 in Nashville. Not unlike Nickel Creek, the band is a harmony-laden trio with Charles Kelley (lead and background vocals), Dave Haywood (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin) and Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals).
The group's first outing was as background vocalists on Jim Brickman's single "Never Alone" in 2007. Capitol Records saw the writing on the wall and signed them up. The first official Lady Antebellum single, "Love Don't Live Here," wasted no time climbing the country charts, all the way to number three.
Two more solid singles -- "Lookin' for a Good Time" and "I Run to You," which topped the charts – helped the band's 2008 self-titled debut achieve platinum status. An opening slot on Martina McBride's Waking Up Laughing Tour also helped build the group's fan base.
Lady Antebellum scored their second number one with "Need You Now," the first single and title track off their sophomore effort. The cut even crossed over to climb the Billboard Hot 100 up to the second seat and the Hot Adult Contemporary chart all the way to the top. "American Honey" proved just as fateful, becoming the third hit in the country chart-topping run.
The Need You Now album was released in February, 2010 debuting on top of the Billboard charts, as well, selling 480,922 copies in its first week out. Platinum status came within a month. In April, 2010, Lady Antebellum performed on American Idol, the show that had twice rejected Scott in the first round of competition.
Other awards have been just as quick to come. The Academy of Country Music named Lady Antebellum their Top New Duo or Group in 2009 and the Country Music Association dubbed them the New Artist of the Year in 2008. At the 2009 CMAs, Lady Antebellum won for Vocal Group of the Year, ending the six-year reign of Rascal Flatts.
Two Grammy nominations came for each of those years, as well, with a win for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group in 2010. The 2010 ACM Awards also gave them prizes for Top Vocal Group, Song of the Year, and Single of the Year for "Need You Now."
