About Rascal Flatts
As of 2011, Rascal Flatts has released seven studio albums. All seven have been certified platinum and the last six went to number one on the Top Country Albums chart. Four of their studio albums crossed over to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200. The band also has 11 number one country singles to their credit.
The incredibly successful country music trio is comprised of Jay DeMarcus, Gary LeVox, and Joe Don Rooney. They were signed in 1999 and released their self-titled debut a year later. At the urging of his second-cousin DeMarcus, LeVox moved to Nashville, Tennessee so the two could pursue a career in music. One night, while playing at a Printer's Alley nightclub, DeMarcus and LeVox's regularly scheduled guitarist was unable to perform. Since the show must go on, the duo asked Rooney to sit in. He did and the three, as well as the audience, realized they had stumbled onto something very special.
During that initial jam session, the trio was approached by a man bragging about his childhood band. What makes this drunken anecdote different from the millions of nightclub patrons who think they were the only teenager who rocked out in their parent's garage was the name of the man's band, Rascal Flatts. DeMarcus, LeVox, and Rooney liked the appellation so much they decided to take it as their own.
The trio followed up their debut effort with Melt (2002). Two years later they released Feels Like Today (2004) and then Me and My Gang (2006)—both have been certified 5x platinum. The next year, Still Feels Good (2007) hit store shelves. Rascal Flatts chased that top-selling record with two more, Unstoppable (2009) and Nothing Like This (2010). That last album was the band's first release on Big Machine Records. Up until 2010, the band was signed with Disney Music Group's Lyric Street Records.
In 2011, the band launched "Flatts Fest." Fans who bought Rascal Flatts tickets for this North American tour were treated to a bevy of activities like karaoke, carnival games, and miniature golf. The traveling, day-long festival was undertaken to do more than just to sell country music tickets. The band wanted to do something different and treat their fans to an experience they wouldn't soon forget. Besides a set from Rascal Flatts, "Flatts Fest" also featured performances by country singers Sara Evans and Justin Moore.
More on Rascal Flatts
Columbus, Ohio might not be known as a hotbed of country music, but Rascal Flatts managed to create a good spark from that home terrain. With seven CDs to their name, including one greatest hits collection, the band has done very well for themselves.
Second cousins Gary Levox and Jay DeMarcus founded the group, which is named after an Oklahoma landmark, along with Joe Don Rooney. Their debut single, “Prayin' for Daylight,” topped the Billboard country chart and started a string of four Top Ten hits from their freshman release. Of the batch, “I'm Movin' On” would go on to be named 2002's Song of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.
As a touring act, the group is among the top 25 artists employing pyrotechnics, special effects, and lasers in their stage production. Known in industry circles for their three-night sell out of Madison Square Garden, they are also the only country music act to ever sell out Wrigley Field.
Having 11 number one singles, over 20 million CD sales, and more cuts in Billboard’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade, Rascal Flatts has a lot to celebrate and this year marks their 10-year anniversary together. And if fans think they've seen it all from this band, they better think again. This new decade harbors a lot to look forward to.
“We’ve talked about doing a gospel record someday,” bass player Jay DeMarcus told The Tennessean. “We’d like to do a full-blown Christmas record at some point, and we’d like to stretch some, too. The six records we’ve done have been unmistakably Rascal Flatts.
But there’s an itch inside of each one of us that wants to do a hardcore country record that hearkens back to the stuff we grew up on, and that our parents loved, and that we’ve been singing our whole lives. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see a few surprises from us.”
Rascal Flatts To End 'Flatts Fest' In Time For Hunting Season
Bands schedule their tours around a lot of events—recording sessions, movie roles, television appearances, vacations—but very few artists schedule concerts around hunting season. Yet, that's exactly what Rascal Flatts did.
The band's frontman, Gary LeVox, admitted as much during his appearance on the Hunt Life Outdoor Show back in July of 2011.
“We usually try to finish up right at the beginning of bow season or a week or two into October. We’ve been blessed enough to be able to adjust our schedule. My partners Jay and Joe Don, they’ve always been really cool about it. I tell them, you know, the end of the season starts in January, so any time after that I will give all that I can give up until that point, but I’ve got to have October/November off.”
“The outdoors and the hunting, that’s just who I am as a person,” explains LeVox. "...Not everybody likes to go play golf. I’d rather shoot a bird than try to make a bird in a hole.”
Personally, I don't hunt. I don't have any objections to shooting animals for sport, but I do object to sloshing around the woods in the wee hours of the morning. Still, I find LeVox's candor refreshing. Most celebrities would be recalcitrant to publicly support something that's the epitome of political correctness.
The much anticipated "Flatts Fest" is the band's latest and greatest endeavor. And like everything they do, it's a resounding success.
“This is something we’ve never done before, and it’s going to be stuff to do all day long for people to come out and have a nice time,” said LeVox. “It’s pretty cool. We didn’t want people to just come to the show and go home.”
"Flatts Fest" treats fans to carnival games, miniature golf, a photo booth, karaoke, and a singing contest.
The crooner competition is a huge deal. A contestant will be chosen from each city the band visits. Those singers will then compete in a sing-off. The winner of that round will have the opportunity to open for Rascal Flatts at a future concert.
“Who knows, we could find the next American Idol,” joked LeVox.
