All About Adele
Adele’s debut album, 19, was released on Jan. 28, 2008 and eventually certified double platinum. The opus featured the hit songs “Chasing Pavements” and “Cold Shoulders.” It was so successful critics wondered how was she going to top it? Well, she topped it with another numerically-named album, 21. Released on Jan. 19, 2011, the album went on to sell more than 20 million copies and earned Adele a record-tying six Grammy Awards. Her immense commercial success set sales records all over the world and won her Billboard’s “Artist of the Year” honors for 2011.
Adele’s is able to sell so many records during a time when no one is selling a lot of records because of her sultry and soulful voice. Her captivating vocals and accessible material makes her attractive to music fans of all ages. She’s youthful and fresh enough for teens and 20-somethings but has the talent and artistry to capture the imagination of more mature music fans. She has also garnered the respect and admiration of a wide range of her contemporaries like Beyoncé Knowles and Dave Grohl.
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born on May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, north London, England. Her mother was a teenager when Adele was born and her father left when she was just three. Adele began singing at an early age and was a big fan of the Spice Girls. She would later become interested in American R&B. While in school, Adele recorded a three-song demo that eventually fell into the possession of one of her friends. This friend had an ear for music and posted the tracks on Myspace. Adele’s songs were an instant hit and received so much attention that she was contacted by a record company. That phone call led to a meeting and that meeting led to Adele signing a contract with XL Recordings in September of 2006.
One could make the case that Adele owes her success in the United States to Sarah Palin. Adele’s 19 hit America with a thud, and then to make matters worse, she canceled a tour of the United States to be with her boyfriend. With her album languishing in America, Adele was booked as the musical guest for an episode of Saturday Night Live (October 18, 2008). Thanks to a scheduled appearance by vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the episode earned SNL its best ratings in nearly a decade and a half. The following day, her album topped the iTunes charts and jumped to number 11 on the Billboard 200.
