About Cirque du Soleil's OvoCirque du Soleil is known for their mesmerizing feats, all of which combine emotion-filled dance, mood-inducing music, mind-boggling acrobatics, sensational costumes, and electrifying theatrics into an incredible experience. The Canadian circus company describes its work as a "dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment." Each show creates a world that is entirely unique and the world of OVO is a light-hearted one based on bugs. Written and staged by Brazilian dancer/choreographer Deborah Colker, the first female Cirque show creator, OVO's world is inhabited by spiders, ladybugs, grasshoppers, butterflies, ants, dragonflies, and such. The storyline revolves around this bug colony having procured a large egg, lost by a passing fly who attempts to get it back. (Ovo is Portuguese for egg.) As the show unfolds, the fly and a ladybug fall in love. The official Cirque du Soleil description of the show calls OVO “a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.” The OVO cast consists of 53 members from 13 countries. Included among them are high wire walkers, contortionists, tumblers, trapeze artists, jugglers, and more. The show premiered in Montreal in 2009 before going on a tour of North America, stopping in cities such as San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, and Cincinnati. The New York Post calls the production “thrilling... such stupendous feats of physical grace and athleticism that they’ll leave you gasping. [OVO is] one of Cirque's most seamless and stylish shows in years. The insect theme makes for dazzlingly colorful stage imagery and costumes, from the giant spider web and cocoon incorporated into some of the routines to the cute cockroach outfits worn by the musicians. OVO fluidly melds its awe-inspiring circus acts into a wonderful, otherworldly whole.”
