About the Los Angeles Dodgers
On April 15, 1947 the Dodgers, due in large part to the efforts of General Manager Branch Rickey, made Jackie Robinson the first African American to play for a Major League Baseball team. Robinson's breaking of baseball's color barrier was the most important sports event of the 20th Century and a major milestone in America's civil rights movement.
To honor the man and his accomplishments, the entire league retired Robinson's number 42 in 1997. The Dodgers were established in 1883 in Brooklyn but relocated to Los Angeles in 1958. The franchise has won more National League Pennants than any team in MLB history.
The Dodgers are aligned in the West Division and they play their home games at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers have a heated rivalry with another former New York team, the San Francisco Giants. Past Dodger greats include Sandy Koufax, Pee Wee Reese, and Don Drysdale. Currently, the team is led by outfielders Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp.
