About the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates won the first World Series of the modern era way back in 1909. That team featured hall of fame shortstop Honus Wagner. In 1971, the Pirates became the first MLB team to field an all-black starting lineup. Later that year they won the World Series title. In 1972, Pirate great Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash while delivering supplies to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. Clemente was a hall of fame player but an even greater humanitarian. In 1979, the Pirates won their fifth World Series title thanks to players like Willie Stargell and Dave Parker. That '79 team is often referred to as "We Are Family." That's the name of a Sister Sledge song that frequently played at the stadium. The Pirates were established in 1882 and are currently aligned in the National League's Central Division. Their home stadium is PNC Park and they are led by outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
