About the Kansas City Royals
The City of Kansas City rooted for the Athletics from 1955 to 1967. After they left for Oakland, a Missouri Senator demanded a replacement franchise. Major League Baseball acquiesced and awarded Kansas City the Royals. The new team played its first game in 1969.
The name "Royals" pays homage to both the Kansas City Monarchs of the Nergo League and the American Royal, an annual livestock show and rodeo. The Royals greatest player is hall of fame third basemen George Brett. He led the team to a World Series title in 1985. The Royals play in Kauffman Stadium and are aligned in the American League's Central Division. The club is led by perennial CY Young candidate Zack Greinke.
