About the Bruins

The term "Original Six" is something of a misnomer. Of the six teams included in the group—Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs—only the two Canadian teams were present for the league's inaugural season of 1917-1918.

The term actually dates to the NHL expansion of 1967 when the league added six new franchises. Thus you had the "new teams" and the "Original Six." Of the four American teams in the Original Six only the Red Wings (11) have more Stanley Cups than the Bruins (5). Despite those five trophies, the Bruins have suffered through a 29-year Stanley Cup drought (ended in 1970) and, as of 2010, are in the midst a decades-long drought that started in 1972.

While they've gone long spells without a championship they frequently qualify for the playoffs. In fact, the Bruins have notched 21 division championships throughout their history.

The Bruins were founded in 1924 by grocery magnate Charles Adams. Just four years later the team won its first Stanley Cup. The 1995 playoffs was the last time the Bruins played in the fabled Boston Gardens. The next season they moved into the Fleet Center which is now called TD Garden.

The Bruins compete in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Their main rivals are the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers. Some of the great players that have skated for the Bruins include Ray Bourque, Gerry Cheevers, Dit Clapper, Phil Esposito, Cam Neely, Milt Schmidt, and Bobby Orr.
