About the Cincinnati Reds
From 1970 to 1976, the Cincinnati Reds completely dominated the National League. That team, known as the Big Red Machine, was regarded as not only the best team in baseball but one of the best teams in the history of the game. During that seven-year stretch, the Reds won five division crowns, four pennants and two World Series titles.
The Big Red Machine was managed by Sparky Anderson and featured Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Pérez. Today, the Reds are aligned in the NL's Central Division and they play their games at the Great American Ball Park. The team is led by outfielder Jay Bruce and second baseman Brandon Phillips.
The Reds franchise dates back to 1882 but that team evolved from the Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first professional team, who can trace their origins to 1869.
