About the San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres were established in 1969. They adopted their name from the city's Pacific Coast League team which was once led by hometown hero Ted Williams. The Padres immediately struggled. They finished in last place each of their first six seasons and they lost 100 games or more four times. In 1974, the team was so close to moving to Washington D.C. that new uniforms were made. However, the team was sold to McDonald's co-founder Ray Kroc and he kept the team in San Diego.
Outfielders Dave Winfield and Tony Gwynn were both inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as Padres. Gwynn played his entire 20-year career with the Padres and finished with a lifetime batting average of .338. The Padres are aligned in the West Division of the National League. Since 2004, the team has played their home games at PETCO Park. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is one of the Padres top players.
