About the Charlotte Bobcats
The Charlotte Bobcats are one of those anomalous professional sports teams. In 2002, Charlotte lost their first NBA team, the Charlotte Hornets, to the city of New Orleans. Then two seasons later the city got another NBA franchise. Apparently in the two years between teams, the National Basketball Association figured out how to make professional basketball work in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Bobcats' first owner was Robert J. Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television. He became the first African-American majority owner of a professional sports team in North America. There was some talk that the team was named after Johnson, as he's often called "Bob." However, the bobcat is indigenous to the Carolinas.
At the end of 2009 season, the Cats were pushing for their ever playoff berth, but were forced to play their final four games on the road because team management decided to host a major horse event. The decision did not sit well with players as that was the exact number of wins they needed to reach the playoffs. The next season, Johnson decided to sell his majority shares to NBA legend Michael Jordan. This made Jordan the first former NBA player to become majority owner of a franchise. The Bobcats would make the playoffs the following year but were swept by the Orlando Magic. The team is aligned in the Eastern Conference and is part of the Southeast Division with the Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, and Washington Wizards. The Bobcats call Time Warner Cable Arena home. The venue is located in center city Charlotte.
