The Cleveland Cavaliers have a long history of being spurned by superstars. In 1989, the Cavs were coached by hall of famer Lenny Wilkens and featured stars Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, and Larry Nance. In Game 5 of the opening round of the playoffs, Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls hit a game-winning shot over Cavs guard Criag Ehlo to win the series. The play, which saw Jordan practically hovering in the air, is now known as "The Shot." In 1992, The Cavs won 57 games but were once again sent home by Jordan and the Bulls. They bested the Cavs in the Eastern Conference Finals, 4-2. In 2003, the Cavs drafted LeBron James right out of high school. He quickly became one of the league's best players and led the Cavs to the NBA Finals in 2007. In 2010, James left the Cleveland and signed with the Miami Heat. His departure (he announced his decision during a one hour show that aired on ESPN) was seen as a betrayal by many Cavaliers fans. With James, the Cavs were a perennial NBA Finals contender, without him they are a lottery team.
The Cavs entered the National Basketball Association in 1970 as an expansion team. They are in the Eastern Conference and are aligned in the Central Division with the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, and Milwaukee Bucks. The team plays their home games at Quicken Loans Arena located in downtown Cleveland. Some of the Cavs best players over the years include Bingo Smith, Austin Carr, and Danny Ferry. The franchise also had the first deaf player in the league, Lance Allred, and the first openly gay player, John Amaechi.
