The Detroit Pistons of the late 1980s and early 1990s were known as the "Bad Boys." The team of this era played a tough, hard-nose, defensive-oriented style. They didn't always play that way though. After years of early playoff exits, Pistons head coach Chuck Daly and captain Isiah Thomas decided they needed to turn up the intensity and the aggression. Using their new style of play, the Pistons advanced to the conference finals in 1987 but couldn't get past the Boston Celtics. The following year they made it all the way to the NBA Finals but fell to the Los Angeles Lakers. In keeping with their tradition of improving on the previous year's results, the Bad Boys finally won their first NBA Championship in 1989. It was a rematch of the 1988 NBA Finals, but this time the Pistons swept the Lakers. The Pistons successfully defended their title the follow year by easily dispatching the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Pistons won their third NBA title in 2004 with a diverse Pistons team coach by Larry Brown and featuring Chauncey Billups, Richard "Rip" Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace. The Pistons shocked the basketball world by defeating a hall of fame laden Lakers team in five games. The Pistons play their home games at The Palace of Auburn Hills located in Auburn Hills, a suburb of Detroit. They were founded in 1941 as the Fort Wayne Pistons, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). The team joined the National Basketball Association in 1948 and moved to Motown in 1957. Today, they are aligned in the Eastern Conference in the Central Division with the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, and Milwaukee Bucks.
