The Indiana Pacers first took to the court in 1967 as members of the American Basketball Association. During their nine seasons in the ABA, the Pacers won three championships. They were by far that league's most successful franchise. Their dynasty ended in 1976 when they joined the National Basketball Association. While in the NBA, the team struggled until they drafted Reggie Miller in 1987. Miller, along with players like Rik Smits, Derrick McKey, Dale Davis, Antonio Davis, Marc Jackson, and Detlef Schrempf, turned the Pacers into a perennial playoff team. One of the highlights of this era came in the 1995 playoffs when Miller scored eight points in the game's final 8.9 seconds to lift the Pacers past their hated rivals, the New York Knicks. However, the Pacers wouldn't reach the NBA Finals until 2000. That year they clashed with the Los Angeles Lakers but fell in six games. They did however hand the Lakers their worse playoff defeat (at the time) thanks to a 33-point win in Game 5.

The franchise hit a low point in 2004 when a large brawl between players and fans broke out at a game between the Detroit Pistons. Known as the "Malice at the Palace," the incident involved 11 players and 5 fans. More than $11 million worth of fines were levied and five players received criminal charges. The brawl started after Ron Artest (now Metta World Peace) ran into the stands to confront a spectator. The Pacers are part of the Eastern Conference and the Central Division. The other teams in their division are the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks. The Pacers play their home games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse located in downtown Indianapolis.
