About the New Orleans Hornets
Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, from 2005 to 2007 the New Orleans Hornets had to temporary relocate to Oklahoma City. The history of sports tells us that when teams have to make this type of concession they usually struggle. The Hornets were no exception. They lost more than they won during their time in OKC. The franchise returned to New Orleans full-time for the 2007-2008 season and what a difference having a permanent home makes. The Hornets won 56 games, finished first in their division, and entered the playoffs as the number two seed. Their star point guard, Chris Paul, was named to the All-NBA team and led the league in steals and assists. Unfortunately for the Hornets and their supporters, they were ousted from the playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs in the conference semi-finals in seven games.
The Hornets entered the league in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets and relocated to the city of New Orleans before the start of the 2002 season. The team left Charlotte because no one was coming to their games. In fact, their final season in North Carolina the team finished last in attendance. The reason for all the empty seats wasn't the team's performance as the Hornets reached the second round of the playoffs that year. While in Charlotte, the Hornets made the playoffs in half of their 14 seasons and won 50 or more games three times. The franchise now plays at the New Orleans Arena situated in the city's central business district, next to the Superdome. The Hornets are aligned in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference along with the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and San Antonio Spurs. Some of the great Hornets players over the years include Alonzo Mourning, Glen Rice, Larry Johnson, and Baron Davis.
