In Game 5 of the 1970 NBA Finals, the New York Knicks rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers and take a three-games-to-two lead. Without Reed in the lineup for Game 6, the Lakers easily won and tied the best-of-seven series at three wins a piece. Prior to Game 7, Reed hobbled onto the court determined to help his team win. Reed scored the Knicks' first two baskets and then went scoreless the rest of the way. Nonetheless, his heroics were more than enough to inspire the Knicks to defeat the Lakers, 113-99, and claim the franchise's first NBA title. For Reed's courageousness, he was named Finals MVP. Also that year, he earned All-Star MVP and league MVP honors. He was the first player to win all three awards in the same year.

The Knicks also won the NBA title in 1973 and reached the finals in 1994 and 1999. The Knicks of 1994 were coached by Pat Riley and led by center Patrick Ewing. They were defeated by the Houston Rockets in a thrilling seven game series. The team of 1999 was the first eighth-seed to ever reach the NBA Finals.
