About Oklahoma City Thunder
In the 2007 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers made one of the biggest mistakes in league history. They passed on Kevin Durant. The prolific scorer was then selected by the Seattle SuperSonics, a franchise that would move to Oklahoma City in 2008 and changed their name to the "Oklahoma City Thunder." Almost immediately, Durant emerged as superstar. He won rookie of the year honors and then NBA scoring titles in 2010 and 2011. He also earned NBA All-Star MVP honors in 2012. In 2010, the team returned the playoffs for the first time since 2005. While they only qualified as an eighth seed, their win-loss record was 50-32, making them one of the best eighth seeds in the history of the National Basketball Association. The next year, Durant and the Thunder made it all the way to the conference finals where they were eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in five games.
The franchise that's now the OKC Thunder was founded in Seattle in 1967. During their 41 years in the Emerald City, the Sonics won three conference championships and the 1979 NBA title. The franchise's move to Oklahoma was due to local lawmakers’ inability to approve public funding for a new venue. The sale of the team, and the move eastward, were wrought with lawsuits and bitterness. The Thunder's Washington State roots explain why they are aligned in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The other four teams in their division are the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, and Utah Jazz. The Thunder play their home games at the Chesapeake Energy Arena located in downtown Oklahoma City.
