About Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers have only won three NBA Championships (1955, 1967, and 1983) but over the years they've had some of the greatest players in the history of the game on their roster: Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson. Perhaps the greatest Sixer of all-time is "Dr. J," Julius Erving. Dr. J joined the 76ers in 1976 and played with the team through the 1986-1987 season. Although he didn't win either award while in Philadelphia, Erving is the only player to have won MVP awards in both the American Basketball Association and the National Basketball Association. He was also selected to 11 NBA All-Star games. However, Dr. J's biggest contribution to the game of basketball was bringing athleticism and jumping ability to the forefront; he made dunking cool.
The 76ers are the NBA's oldest continuously operated franchise. They were founded in 1939 in Syracuse and known as the Syracuse Nationals. The team moved to the City of Brotherly Love in 1963 and changed their name to the Philadelphia 76ers. They joined the NBA in 1949. Nowadays, the Sixers are part of the Eastern Conference and are aligned in the Atlantic Division with the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Toronto Raptors. The team calls the Wells Fargo Center home. The 20,000-seat venue is located in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex on Broad Street.
