About the Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors entered the NBA in 1995 along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Raptors and Grizzlies were part of the National Basketball Association's expansion into Canada. As of 2012, the Raptors are the NBA's only Canadian team as the Grizzlies left for Memphis in 2001. The last time the NBA had a team representing the Great White North was 1947 with the Toronto Huskies. The Raptors franchise was going to call themselves the "Huskies" but no matter what they did they couldn't create a logo that didn't look like it belonged to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team launched a national contest to name the team and "Raptors" was selected from over 2,000 entries.
Like most NBA expansion teams, the Raptors struggled on the court during their first couple of years. Things turned around in 1998 when they drafted Vince Carter. He led the team to NBA Playoff appearances in 2001, 2002, and 2003. After the team missed the playoffs in 2004, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Chris Bosh took over for Carter as team leader and the Raptors reached the playoffs again in 2007 and 2008. Despite efforts to keep him in Canada, Bosh signed with the Miami Heat before the start of the 2010-2011 season. The Raptors once played their home games at SkyDome but moved to the Air Canada Centre, located in downtown Toronto, in 1999. The team is part of the NBA's Eastern Conference. They are aligned in the Atlantic Division with the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers. The Raptors' first ever draft pick was used on University of Arizona point guard Damon Stoudamire.
