About the Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions made history in 2008. Unfortunately, it was the wrong type of history. In 2008, the Lions went 16-0 becoming the first NFL team to do so since the inception of the 16-game regular season. It was also the statistically worse year an NFL team has ever had. The Lions two closest games of that year were a 2-point and a 4-point loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Other than those two games, the Lions only managed to keep three of their losses within one score (8 points or less). The Lions did infinitely better in 2009. That season they went 2-14. The franchise managed to right itself in 2011 as it qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the 21st century. The Lions have won four NFL Championships, one in the 1930s and three in the 1950s. They have not won, nor reached, a Super Bowl.
The Lions were founded in 1929 in Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans. They moved to Detroit before the start of the 1934 season. The team's home stadium is Ford Field. They are aligned in the NFC North Division along with rivals the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings. Despite the long history of losing, the Lions have seen several of their players enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame including Barry Sanders, Dick "Night Train" Lane, Bobby Layne, and Doak Walker.
