About the San Diego Chargers
On the second day of the year in 1982 the San Diego Chargers defeated the Miami Dolphins in an AFC divisional playoff game that is widely regarded as the greatest of all-time. The contest has been dubbed "The Epic in Miami" and the Chargers won it, 41-38. At the time, the game set records for most combined points, yards, and passing yards. The following week, the Chargers were in another famous game. This one called "The Freezer Bowl." Unfortunately for the franchise and their fans, they were defeated by the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-7. While the Chargers played in 85-degree weather for "The Epic in Miami" the temperature, including the wind chill, for "The Freezer Bowl" was negative 59.
The Chargers that played in the aforementioned games were led by quarterback Dan Fouts. He ran an offense named after his head coach, Don Coryell, called "Air Coryell." That team never made it to the Super Bowl but the franchise did make it in 1994. In Super Bowl XXIX, the Chargers were pummeled by the San Francisco 49ers, 49-26. The Chargers are aligned in the AFC West along with their rivals the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders. The Chargers, also known as "The Bolts" or the "Super Chargers," play their home games at Qualcomm Stadium. Some famous Chargers over the years include Lance Allworth, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Junior Seau, Antonio Gates, and LaDainian Tomlinson.
