About the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are widely regarded as the worst team in the history of the NFL. They finished 0-14, were shutout four times, and scored a measly 125 points. In one of the most famous quotes in NFL history, Bucs heads coach John McKay was asked about the execution of his team's offensive line. McKay stoically answered, "I'm in favor of it." Things got so bad for the team—they lost the first 26 games they played in the NFL—that fans began wearing paper bags over their heads. Fortunes turned around for the franchise rather quickly. In 1979, they qualified for the postseason and made it all the way to the NFC championship game. The team was fairly competitive in the late 1970s and early 1980s and then suffered through 14 consecutive losing seasons. That was followed by a ten-year period when the team was a perennial playoff contender.
The Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl in 2003 (at the end of the 2002 season). In Super Bowl XXXVII, the Buccaneers defeated the Oakland Raiders, 48-21. The Bucs Super Bowl winning team was coached by Jon Gruden. The previous year he had coached the Raiders but in a rare roster move was traded to the Buccaneers in the offseason. The Buccaneers are aligned in the NFC South along with rivals the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and New Orleans Saints. Bucs play their home games at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
