About the Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames won the 1989 Stanley Cup Final in a closely fought six-game series over the Montreal Canadiens. It was the first championship for the Flames and the first time the Canadiens ever lost the cup at home. It was also the last time (as of 2011) that the Stanley Cup Finals involved two Canadian teams. Al MacInnis was selected as the most valuable player of the playoffs and was first defenseman to lead the league in post-season scoring. The series also witnessed the last goal scored by Lanny McDonald. The future hall of famer would retire in the offseason. Not only would the Flames not defend their title, they would not win another playoff series for 15 years. When they finally did win a playoff series it was on their way to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately for them and their fans, the Flames fell in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Calgary Flames entered the National Hockey League in 1972 as the Atlanta Flames. They relocated to Calgary in 1980. Today, they are aligned in the Western Conference and are part of the Northwest Division with the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks. The team’s main rivals are the Oilers; when they meet fans usually refer to it as “The Battle of Alberta.” Some of the most famous Flames over the years include Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, Theoren Fleury, Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Suter, and Gary Roberts. The Flames play their home games at the Scotiabank Saddledome situated at the east end of downtown Calgary.
