The Chicago Blackhawks and their nemesis, the Detroit Red Wings, clashed in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final. It was the only finals in 1960s that wasn’t won by the Montreal Canadiens or the Toronto Maple Leafs (in fact, it was also the only finals in that decade that didn’t involve either one of those teams). The Blackhawks, which starred legends Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, won the series in six games. It was the Hawks first championship since 1938. They wouldn’t win another one until 2010. In that year, the Blackhawks once again needed six games to dispatch their opponent. This time they were up against the Philadelphia Flyers. Chicago was led by center Jonathan Toews; he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff’s most valuable player. Toews also won an Olympic Gold medal that year with Team Canada and so did his Blackhawk teammates Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. Hitherto, winning the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the same year had only been achieved by three players.

The Blackhawks are aligned in the Western Conference and are part of the Central Division with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, and St. Louis Blues. They play their home games at the United Center. The team joined the National Hockey League in 1926 and are one of the league’s “Original Six” teams. The franchise’s first owner, Frederic McLaughlin, served during World War I as a member of the 33rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division. That division was nicknamed, “Blackhawk,” after Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk Nation (a major figure in the history of Illinois). McLaughlin honored his old division by using their sobriquet as the name of his new hockey team. Through the years, the team’s name was sometimes spelled “Blackhawks” and sometimes “Black Hawks.” During the summer of 1986, the franchise settled on “Chicago Blackhawks.”
