About Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche moved from Quebec (where they were known as the Nordiques) to Denver before the start of the 1995-1996 season. This was the team’s third home as they were founded in the World Hockey Association in 1972 in San Francisco. They joined the National Hockey League in 1979. In the Avalanche’s first season in the Rocky Mountains, they amassed 104 points and entered the playoffs as the number two seed. More importantly, they had future hall of famer Patrick Roy between the pipes. The team acquired him from the Montreal Canadiens in December. The Avalanche defeated the Detroit Red Wings, who had the league’s best record, in the conference finals in six games to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. In the championship round, the Avalanche swept the Florida Panthers. With the victory, the Avalanche became the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup immediately after relocating.
The Avalanche would win a second Stanley Cup in 2001. The team of that year scored 118 points in the regular season and was led by Captain Joe Sakic who also scored 118 points. After winning their conference title, the Avalanche rallied from a 3-2 deficit to defeat the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals. As soon as Sakic received Lord Stanley’s Cup he passed it to the great Ray Bourque. It was the first time the defenseman was on a championship team in his legendary 22-year career. The Colorado Avalanche are members of the Western Conference and are aligned in the Northwest Division with the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks. The team plays their home games at the Pepsi Center. The franchise’s most prominent players through the years include Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote, Milan Hejduk, Michel Goulet, and Peter Stastny.
