About Dallas Stars
Prior to the 1998-1999 season, the Dallas Stars acquired the last piece of their championship puzzle, future hall of famer and prolific scorer, Brett Hull. With Hull, the Stars won 51 games and accrued 114 points. The Stars entered the 1999 NHL Playoffs as the league’s top team. After rolling through the postseason and winning their conference championship, the Stars faced the Buffalo Sabres in the Stanley Cup Finals. The clubs were even after four games before the Stars defense took over and allowed just one goal in the series’ final two games. Hull scored the series-clinching goal in the third overtime period of Game 6. His goal has gone down as one of the most controversial in the history of the National Hockey League. At the time, the league had a rule that the puck had to precede the player into the crease. In the case of Hull’s overtime goal, he was outside of the crease when he took his first shot but inside when he collected the rebound and shot again. Much to the chagrin of Sabres fans, the NHL dropped the so-called “crease rule†the following year.
The Stars’ 1999 Stanley Cup victory was the first for the franchise but their third trip to the finals. The franchise went twice when they were the Minnesota North Stars. The Stars franchise entered the NHL in 1967 when the league doubled its size and added six expansion teams. The franchise relocated to North Texas in 1993. Today, the Stars play at American Airlines Arena in the Dallas neighborhood of Victory Park. The team is aligned in the Pacific Division with the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and San Jose Sharks. Some of the most prominent players in Dallas Stars’ team history include Mike Modano, Ed Belfour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Neal Broten, Jere Lehhtinen, and Sergei Zubov.
