About Los Angeles Kings
Prior to the start of the 1988-1989 season, the Los Angeles Kings pulled off one of the biggest roster moves in the history of the National Hockey League. They traded for Wayne Gretzky. The “Great One†not only made his new team instantly competitive, but he made Kings tickets a hot commodity in Los Angeles. Furthermore, he popularized hockey in California and paved the way for franchises in warm-weather cities like Anaheim, Phoenix, Nashville, and Miami. Ironically, the Kings’ most successful season came in 1992-1993, the year Gretzky played his fewest games for the franchise (45). In the postseason, Gretzky and the Kings defeated both the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks in six games. They then needed all seven games to get past the Toronto Maple Leafs and reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history. After besting the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 in Game 1, the Kings lost the next four games (the first three in overtime) and the series. While a member of the Kings, Gretzky became the NHL’s all-time leading scorer. He was traded during the 1996 season to the St. Louis Blues.
The Los Angeles Kings entered the NHL in 1967 as part of the league’s six-team expansion. Throughout most of the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, the Kings qualified for the postseason. With the exception of the 1992-1993 season, the team failed to make it pass the second round. After their Stanley Cup Finals trip in 1993, the Kings went four years without making the playoffs. The Kings are aligned in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference with the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Phoenix Coyotes, and San Jose Sharks. Their home arena is Staples Center located in downtown Los Angeles. Some of the Kings best players over the years include Luc Robitaille, Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, Rob Blake, Rogie Vachon, and Jari Kurri.
