About Minnesota Wild
In the 2002-2003 season, the Minnesota Wild didn’t win the Stanley Cup, their conference, or even their division. Despite all that, it was still an exciting, memorable, and historic year for the Wild. The team qualified for the postseason for the first time in franchise history. The Wild began play in the National Hockey League in 2000-2001. That year was the return of professional ice hockey to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The region’s former NHL team, the Minnesota North Stars, moved to Dallas in 1993. In the first round of the 2002-2003 playoffs, the Wild defeated the Colorado Avalanche in seven games. The Wild rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the series. Left winger Andrew Brunette scored the series-clinching goal and the last ever on hall of fame goalie Patrick Roy. The second round was similar to the first as the Wild once again found themselves in a 3-1 hole. Just like they did in the conference quarterfinals, the Wild mounted a furious comeback and defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games. In doing so, the Wild became the first NHL team to win two seven-game series, in the same year, after being down 3-1. Unfortunately for the Wild and their supporters, they were swept in the conference finals by the Anaheim Ducks.
The Wild are aligned in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Their division mates are the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, and Vancouver Canucks. The team plays their home games at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Some notable Minnesota Wild players over the years include Mikko Koivu, Marian Gaborik, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Brent Burns, and Wes Walz. Gaborik was the franchise’s first ever draft pick. He also scored the team’s first goal in their regular season debut.
