About Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers are one of the NHL’s most successful expansion teams. The Flyers joined the NHL in 1967 when the league doubled the number of its teams from 6 to 12. The Flyers are not only the first expansion team to win a Stanley Cup (1974) but of all the 24 expansion teams (and as of 2011) they have the most appearances in the league semi-finals (known as the conference finals since 1982) and are tied with the St. Louis Blues for the most playoff appearances. Since coming into the league, and up until the end of the 2010-2011 season, the Flyers have the National Hockey League’s second best winning percentage. Their mark of .578 trails only the Montreal Canadiens who have a winning percentage of .590. Several expansion teams have won more championships than the Flyers (they’ve won their two titles in 1974 and 1975), but the franchise has reached the finals six additional times.
In 1964, an executive with the Philadelphia Eagles noticed a throng of fans lining up to buy tickets to the last-place Boston Bruins. When the executive in question heard the NHL was looking to expand, he began the process of building an arena and landing a franchise. The Flyers originally played their home games at the Spectrum. They are still on Broad Street but now skate at the Wells Fargo Center. The Philadelphia Flyers are aligned in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They are in that division with their rivals New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. The franchise’s best players over the years include Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Bill Barber, and Eric Lindros.
