About the Phoenix Coyotes
Since arriving in Arizona, the Phoenix Coyotes have struggled in the standings and at the box office. The franchise arrived in Phoenix in 1996 and for their first eight seasons played at the dainty American Airlines Arena. While the venue is superb for basketball, it’s way too small for a 200-foot hockey rink. By the time engineers got the arena ready for professional ice hockey, the upper deck hung over the ice obscuring a large part of the playing surface for a good portion of the arena. Then in late 2008, reports began to surface that the Coyotes were losing money and the league was providing financial support. The Coyotes’ owner filed for bankruptcy in early 2009 and before the end of autumn the National Hockey League had purchased the team. Meanwhile, on the ice, the Coyotes struggled. In their first 14 seasons in Phoenix, the Coyotes made the playoff seven times but were bounced out of the first round each time.
The Coyotes franchise was founded in 1972 as the original Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey League (WHL). They joined the league in 1979 when four WHL teams merged with the NHL. Winnipeg supported the team as best they could but the market and venue were too small to compete with other NHL teams, especially with skyrocketing player salaries. The team now plays at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona (about 13 miles from Phoenix). The Phoenix Coyotes are aligned in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference with the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks. Prominent Coyotes and Jets over the years include Keith Tkachuk, Bobby Hull, Dale Hawerchuck, Thomas Steen, Teppo Numminen, and Jeremy Roenick.
