About the Winnipeg Jets
Fans of the Winnipeg Jets need to thank two cities for their team’s existence. Those two cities are Atlanta and Phoenix. Atlanta was the team’s former home. The franchise entered the NHL in 1999 as an expansion team, the Atlanta Thrashers. The team spent a dozen years in Georgia and made the playoffs just once. Their lack of success in Atlanta made it possible for the franchise to be sold and move to Winnipeg before the start of 2011 season. While it was hard to sell hockey tickets in Atlanta, it was a piece of cake to sell them in Winnipeg. Once opened to the public, season tickets to the Winnipeg Jets sold out in 17 minutes.
Winnipeg had a National Hockey League team before. The city’s first NHL squad was founded in 1972 as a member of the World Hockey Association. They joined the NHL in 1979 and then moved to the warmer clime of Phoenix in 1996 to become the “Coyotes.” That team went bankrupt in 2009 and ownership passed to the league. Since the NHL owned the Phoenix Coyotes, they were more than willing to allow the relocated franchise in Winnipeg to adopt the nickname “Jets.” Perhaps if the Coyotes had been successful, and not been purchased by the league, their owners would have held on to their old epithet thus forcing team owners in Winnipeg to pick a new mascot. The franchise’s home in Winnipeg is the MTS Centre located on Portage Avenue. While the franchise traded the American South for the Great White North they remain in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The Winnipeg Jets play in that division with the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals.
