About the Colorado Rapids

The Colorado Rapids are one of the ten charter members of the MLS. They began play in 1996 in the league’s inaugural year. The following season, after overcoming a poor start, the Rapids qualified for the playoffs. After two huge upsets, the team found themselves in the MLS Cup Final. Unfortunately for the Rapids and their supporters, they fell to D.C. United, 2-1. It would be more than a decade before the Rapids would return to the championship game. In 2010, the club qualified for the postseason and then defeated the Columbus Crew and San Jose Earthquakes to reach the MLS Cup. The team trailed at halftime but rallied to send the game into extra time. In extra time, Macoumba Kandji kicked a ball that went off a defender and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. The Rapids defeated FC Dallas 2-1 to claim the franchise’s first MLS Cup Championship.

The Rapids main rivals are Real Salt Lake. Every year, the two teams compete for the Rocky Mountain Cup. The rivalry, which is also called the Rocky Mountain Derby, is one of the best in MLS. The team moved into the soccer-specific stadium, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in 2007. The venue is located in Commerce City, Colorado. In 2010, the team added a supporters terrace at the north end of the park. Inspired by European clubs, and featuring standing room only, the terrace is home to the Bulldog Supporters Group and the Pid Army. Prominent players from Colorado Rapids history include Marcelo Balboa, Kyle Beckerman, Colin Clark, Chris Henderson, Clint Mathis, and Alain Nkong.
