About the Columbus Crew
For years, the Columbus Crew’s three main supporters groups, The Hudson Street Hooligans, La Turbina Amarilla, and The Crew Supporters Union, sat in different areas of the north stands. The three groups had issues with one another and refused to sit together. Then in 2008, the franchise tore down the north stands to make room for a concert stage. The construction caused the three groups to put aside their differences and sit together in the stadium’s north corner. They then began calling themselves “Nordecke” (pronounced Nord-ech-ah). The word means “north corner” in German. The name Nordecke was selected to honor Columbus, Ohio’s rich German heritage. Also at this time, the group started to travel to away games. These trips were part of the “NorOnTour.”
The Columbus Crew is one of Major League Soccer’s ten charter members. They played their first game on April 13, 1996. The franchise was originally owned by American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt. After his passing, ownership was transferred to his son Clark Hunt. The Crew won their first MLS Cup in 2008. The team of that year was led by MVP Barros Schelotto, Defender of the Year Chad Marshall, and Coach of the Year Sigi Schmid. Also known as “The Massive” and “America’s Hardest Working Team,” the club plays their home games at Columbus Crew Stadium. It’s the first soccer-specific stadium built by a MLS team. Before moving to that venue, the Crew played at Ohio Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. Notable Crew players over the years include Freddy Garcia, John Harkes, Edson Buddle, Frankie Hejduk, and the league’s first ever draft pick, Brian McBride.
