The Houston Dynamo can trace their existence back to December 1995 when they were founded as the San Jose Earthquakes. They relocated to Houston prior to the start of the 2006 season after ownership failed to get a new soccer-specific stadium built. Similar to the situation involving the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, the Earthquakes’ players and coaches relocated while everything else stayed in Northern California (the Earthquakes returned to San Jose in 2008). The franchise got off on the wrong foot in Texas. The team wanted to adopt the name “Houston 1836,” a reference to the year the city was founded. However, this upset some members of the Hispanic community who saw the number as the year Texas gained independence from Mexico. Not wanting to upset a large section of their fan base, owners decided to call their team the “Houston Dynamo.” Despite the ominous start, the team’s first two years in Houston were very successful as they captured the MLS Cup in both 2006 and 2007.

The Houston Dynamo’s home pitch is BBVA Compass Stadium located in the East End. The majority of the team is owned by AEG while legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya has a minority share. The team, which draws well especially when the weather cools, has four official supporter groups: Brickwall Firm, El Batallon, La Bateria, and Texian army. The club’s main rivals are FC Dallas. Every year, the two teams compete in the Texas Derby, also known as “El Capitan Clasico.” The winner of the regular season series receives an 18th century cannon dubbed “El Capitan.” Renowned Dynamo players through the years include Dwayne De Rosario, Eddie Robinson, Craig Waibel, Paul Dalglish, and Wade Barrett.
