Seattle Sounders FC is a model expansion franchise both on the pitch and at the box office. The Sounders won its very first MLS match 3-0 over the New York Red Bulls. The club qualified for the playoffs each of their first three seasons in Major League Soccer and won the U.S. Open Cup three consecutive years from 2009 to 2011. Off the field, the team consistently sells out its home games. For its inaugural campaign, the Sounders sold all 22,000 of its season tickets and even more the following year. Also in 2009, the Sounders set a Washington State record when they drew 66,848 fans to a friendly match against FC Barcelona. They broke their own record in 2011 when a friendly against Manchester United drew just over 67,000.

The Sounders play their home games at CenturyLink Field in downtown Seattle, Washington. They share that venue with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. The stadium seats 38,500 for regular soccer games but can expand to 67,000 for special matches. When the team entered the league in 2009, one of its minority owners was comedian Drew Carey. Using his pull, he had the team form the Sounders FC Alliance. A supporters group patterned after FC Barcelona’s fans association. Carey also made sure the club had their own marching band. The Sound Wave is comprised of 53 musicians and they perform at the north end of the stadium. Other Sounders supporters groups are the Emerald City Supporters (sections 121-123), Gorilla FC (sections 119 and 120), The North End Faithful (sections 100, and 144-152), and Immortal Fury (south end). Due to their geographical proximity, the Sounders main rivals are the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Every season, the three teams compete for the Cascadia Cup. Notable players that have suited up for the Seattle Sounders FC over the years include Fredy Montero, James Riley, Steve Zakuani, and Mauro Rosales.
