About The Sporting Kansas City
In 1999, Sporting Kansas City finished the season with 8 wins and 24 losses. However, 2000 would be the franchise’s first full season with Bob Gansler as head coach. What a difference he would make. The team qualified for the playoffs with the best record in the league and goaltender Tony Meola amassed a shutout streak of 681 minutes. After an exciting comeback in the conference final, Sporting advanced to their first ever MLS Cup. As the best defensive team in league they went up against the league’s most potent offense, the Chicago Fire. K.C. scored a goal in 11th minute. It was all they needed as their defense held on to give the franchise their first ever MLS Cup Championship.
The club was founded by American sports legend, Lamar Hunt. The same man who either founded or co-founded the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bulls, American Football League, and Major League Soccer. Hunt’s franchise was one of the 10 original MLS teams. They played their first game on April 13, 1996. For their first year they were known as the “Kansas City Wiz.” Before the 1997 season, they changed their name to the “Kansas City Wizards.” They kept that name until late 2010 when they changed it to Sporting Kansas City. The change in designation coincided with a move to their new soccer-specific stadium, Livestrong Sporting Park located in Kansas City, Kansas. Some of the franchise’s most talented players over the years include Preki, Alexi Lalas, Eddie Johnson, Josh Wolff, Herculez Gomez, and Tony Meola. The team’s supporters groups congregate in the north side of the stadium in an area known as “The Cauldron.”
