About Cirque Du Soleil: Mystere
The Treasure Island Hotel and Casino plays host to Mystère, one of several Cirque du Soleil shows in residence in Las Vegas. Opening on Christmas Day in 1993, Mystère bridges a traditional circus with, well, Cirque du Soleil by combining dance, acrobatics, opera, world music, puppetry, and comedy with circus acts... and a snail named Alice.
Originally envisioned as a Greek/Roman-based production at Caesars Palace, Mystère eventually found a 1,600-seat home at Treasure Island as the first Cirque show to settle into a theatre of its own rather than the big top tent.
Rather than draw from mythology for the story, Mystère instead explores the origins of life as its central theme. A cast of 75 performers from countries far and wide entertain the audience with seven different acts – aerial cube; Chinese poles; hand-to-hand; bungee; trampoline, fast track, and Korean plank; aerial high bar; and Taiko drums. Mystère previously included flying trapeze, aerial straps, and manipulation.
The largest Taiko drum used in Mystère is six feet in diameter and 15 feet in length, weighing a half-ton. It had to be brought into the theatre during construction and can't be removed because there are no doors wide enough to allow its passing.
René Dupéré was charged with composing the music for Mystère, having previously scored Nouvelle Expérience and Saltimbanco for the Cirque family. After an initial release of the cast recording in 1994, the show and, therefore, score was revamped. Another regular Cirque composer, Benoît Jutras, helped with the new version which was released as a live album in 1996.
