Cirque du Soleil is so utterly good at what they do that, when a show misses the mark, they can jigger it around and come up with something great. Such was the case with Criss Angel: Believe. Initial, negative reviews cited a lack of illusions and, so, they added about 30 new tricks to the line-up and – Voila! – a hit was born.
Viva Elvis, though, is another story altogether. As Cirque du Soleil's seventh show in Las Vegas residency, Viva Elvis found a home at the Aria Resort & Casino beginning in early 2010. Even Elvis Presley Enterprises and CKX, Inc. hopped on board as producers to ensure the proper rights, authenticity, and integrity. Still, fans have failed to flock, apparently preferring Graceland to Viva Elvis and, so, the show closes in August of 2012.
The Elvis songs used in Viva Elvis are “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don't Be Cruel,” “One Night,” “All Shook Up,” “Saved,” “Got a Lot of Livin' to Do,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Return to Sender,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” “Western Scene,” “Burning Love,” “Bossa Nova Baby,” “King Creole,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “It's Now or Never,” “Can't Help Falling in Love,” “Love Me/Don't,” “Viva Las Vegas,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “Hound Dog.”
Some of the acts include aerial cadre, trampoline, Chinese poles, roller skate, aerial pas de deux, lassos, ballet, aerial high bar, balancing on chairs, and more. "Got a Lot of Livin' to Do" utilizes seven trampolines, while the “Jailhouse Rock” number was inspired by the marche inversée circus art in which acrobats walk upside down attached to a structure of tracks.
Costumes were designed by Stefano Canulli with an eye toward Elvis Presley's own fashion choices during the 1950s and 1960s. Erich van Tourneau produced the Viva Elvis soundtrack album which was released in late 2010.
