About Cirque Du Soleil: Zumanity
At the New York-New York Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip resides Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity. Since it opened on September 20, 2003, Zumanity has showcased "the sensual side of Cirque du Soleil" in an 18-and-over, adult-themed production created by René Richard Cyr and Dominic Champagne that leans heavy into erotic song and dance in addition to the standard Cirque acrobatics with a touch of nudity thrown in.
The resident Vegas shows all purposely stray from the Cirque du Soleil formula in order to offer a variety of entertainment. O takes place in water; Kà has a straightforward storyline; and Zumanity gets a little bit sexy as it explores human sexuality in a show that is “part burlesque and part cabaret.”
Within Zumanity, the performers employ water bowl (contortion), hoops, hand-to-hand, dislocation, aerial straps, handbalancing, aerial silks, aerial hoops, and roue cyr in acts titled things like 2 Men, Extravaganza, Midnight Bath, and Orgy. Features previously included in Zumanity include pacemakers and fire knife.
The 45-member cast hails from myriad international countries and portrays characters named Faun, Massa, Jonel, Dick and Izzy (two sex therapists/clowns), Rose Boy, Molinier, Queen of Wind, Botero sisters, Androgynous Cape, Gigolo, and Edie, the Mistress of Sensuality, who serves as Zumanity's host.
The provocative costumes for Zumanity were designed by fashion master Thierry Mugler who combines vibrant colors with sensuous textures (fur, leather, feathers, lace, velvet, vinyl, etc) to great effect.
Simon Carpentier composed Zumanity's music which was released in 2005 as a live album.
