About James Taylor

James Taylor (born March 12, 1948) is an American singer-songwriter, born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his father was the dean of the University of North Carolina Medical School. His family summered on Martha's Vineyard.

Taylor's career began in the mid-1960s, but he found his audience in the early 1970s, singing sensitive and gentle acoustic songs. He was was part of a wave of soft singer-songwriters of the time that also included Carole King, John Denver, Jackson Browne and Carly Simon.

His Greatest Hits album from 1976 was certified diamond and has sold more than 11 million copies.

In his over 40 years in the music business, James Taylor has sold more than 40 million albums and earned more than 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records. Taylor has won five Grammy Awards and been honored with induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Taylor’s smooth and warm baritone voice has produced several songs that have become pop music standards: “Fire and Rain,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Carolina In My Mind,” and “Sweet Baby James.”

While Taylor has been releasing albums since the late 1960’s, his 2007 album, One Man Band, has the singer-songwriter blazing new trails. One Man Band is Taylor’s first live album in over 13 years. It features Taylor singing his classic songs accompanied by only his acoustic guitar and pianist Larry Goldings.

Recorded at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the album and its companion DVD, also features Taylor playing with a drum machine—an actual mechanical device that physically bangs a drum. The machine was made by Taylor and his friend, Gordon Fairfield.

Taylor’s self titled debut album was released in 1968 on the Beatles’ Apple record label. It was also the first non-British recording released by Apple.

The album was recorded at Trident Studios at the same time the Beatles were recording the White Album. Not only did Taylor use some of the Beatles’ studio time, George Harrison and Paul McCartney played on “Carolina In My Mind.”

Taylor’s classic song “Something in the Way She Moves” was borrowed by Harrison and used in his song, "Something.” Coincidently, Taylor changed the name of “Something in the Way She Moves” from its original title of “I Feel Fine” to avoid confusion with the Beatles’ song of the same name.

In 1971, Taylor graced the cover of Time magazine and was hailed as the leading artist of the upcoming era of singer-songwriters.

The next year, Taylor married singer-songwriter Carly Simon. They stay married for ten years and had two children together.
